Grace, Dominick M. "From Videodrome to Virtual Light: David Cronenberg and William Gibson." Everything seems to be dead except this board, which is being overrun with "hello, fellow cyberpunkers, how can I act more cyberpunk in real life" crap posts. Although Blade Runner was largely unsuccessful in its first theatrical release, it found a viewership in the home video market and became a cult film. My point was that I prefer to see SF that’s about ordinary kinds of people, as opposed to being about aristocrats, power elites, military officers, or police.

Only a marginal community of hobbyists spent any significant fraction of their lives online, in various bulletin boards, newsgroups, and chat services where they communicated with like-minded explorers of the electronic frontier.

As she begins to explore southern California, Oedipa sees San Narciso, the quintessential California community, as pure communication system: she "looked down a slope, needing to squint for the sunlight, onto a vast sprawl of houses [...] The ordered swirl of houses and streets, from this high angle, sprang at her now with the same unexpected, astonishing clarity as the circuit card had". Valente uses the term "mythpunk" to describe a subgenre of mythic fiction which starts in folklore and myth and adds elements of postmodern literary techniques.

Card's antipathy to cyberpunk is well known, so this is not a hugely convincing argument. I’d add to the list “Ship Breaker” and “Drowned Cities” by Bacigalupi. Japanese director Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell was a strong influence. Where does cyberpunk go, now that we live in an age of smartphones that can make a cup of tea and people have their eyes lasered to see better? ???? Her discussion on female robots being seen as sex objects is rather telling but it also showed the odd gap. But in American science fiction, the city in the future was always brand-new, every square inch of it.
