This established the preconditions for a series of conflicts, known as the French Wars of Religion. The protest erupted suddenly, in many places at once, with distinctive national characteristics in the various regions in which it arose. It seems to some that Albrecht Ritschl has rendered a distinct service to Protestantism by his powerful combination of the historical and the religious aspects of the person of Christ, but the time has not yet come for a system of dogmatics on the basis of investigable history.
